Mind racing / overwhelm

Calm steps to reduce intensity and find one next right step.

If your mind is racing, arguing, predicting, or looping, the fastest win is usually body-first. You're not trying to "think your way out" — you're trying to lower the intensity enough to choose one next step.

ADAM is designed for real-life moments where you need something simple, not a perfect routine.

Try this now

  • Slow exhale — longer out than in. Do it twice.
  • Find one anchor: "One thing. That's enough."
  • Do one stabilising action: open a window, wash your hands, or step outside.

Why body-first?

When your mind is overwhelmed, it's running faster than you can steer. Trying to think clearly in that state is like trying to read in a storm. The body is the shortcut — a slow breath, cold water on your wrists, feet on the floor — these things signal safety to your nervous system.

Once the intensity drops even slightly, you can choose. And choosing one thing is all you need.

When the spiral feels too strong

If the overwhelm feels unmanageable, that's okay. This isn't about willpower. If you need to talk to someone right now, call Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7) or text SHOUT to 85258.
